"There is a lack of quality qualitative texts specifically tailored for public health and I think this text could fill that gap. The emphasis on global health is a very attractive feature for this book as it would lend itself to a wide variety of professionals and students. The “start to finish” overview that the book attempts is very accessible for students who are just learning about how to go about conducting qualitative research."
"…the data collection and analysis are all in one text, the examples given are great, and it provides a chapter on mixed-methods research which would be a natural segue into talking about quantitative data collection and analysis."
"The three greatest strengths are the breadth of topics covered, the connection between classroom teaching and real world practical experience and classroom exercises, resources, practical examples – offering lots of opportunities to practice what is learned in the classroom."
"Those of us who teach and use qualitative methods have been waiting fora book like this for a long time. Deborah Padgett successfully conveysthe reasons for using qualitative methods, epistemological orientations, methodological traditions, and the nuts and bolt of how to do and reportrigorous and relevant qualitative and mixed methods research. Thiswell-balanced book is the perfect fit for those of us who teach andconduct applied health research."
An excellent well-laid out textbook reference in research methodology, highly recommendable to students and lecturers.
a clear outline of mixed and qualitative methods easily readable for public health students
This is a suitable text for Postgraduate and PhD students. It covers not only the usual approaches to qualitative methods but the rise in interest in mixed methods. It also attends to theoretical and conceptual frameworks and rigour in mixed methods, topics students often struggle with. Over all the text is well presented, detailed.but accessible.
Very useful supporting text to students wide ranging research methods module. Will be helpful to those using these methods for their dissertation module
This book is easy to read and I have been a champion of mixed method research and have used this during my MPH & PhD in Glasgow University. Now I am in the Graduate Entry Medical School in Limerick University in Ireland and next week am going for the INMED conference in Dublin and my abstract has been accepted for oral presentation in the conference and the Title of my abstract & presentation is "An Evaluation of the GEMS Peer mentoring programme using Mixed Methods".
I found it to be a very good text. i recommended it both to my Maters and PHD students
This is an excellent book. I have recommended it to 3rd year occupational therapy students for a module that includes public health/health promotion, and for their dissertation. However I think it is more applicable to Masters level for our vocational degree. I will also recommend it to a colleague who runs an evidence based module for an online public health masters. The book is well laid out, easy to read/dip into, and very informative.
This is an excellent textbook. Well designed and I particularly like the creative use of case examples to support the learning objectives.
I found this book really helpful and it meets a need for a concise, usable resource for students undertaking qualitative/mixed method postgraduate research. The text is well structured, leading the student through the research process. The language is deliberately accessible and initially I was concerned about suitability but overall, with some students facing language challenges, I think it is appropriate.
Provides reader with an appropriate introduction to a variety of health research methods specific within the public health arena. Chapters are set out in a clear and logical format, thus providing reader with an easy to follow guide.
Simple and easy to read introductory book on qualitative research. Useful for beginners who would like to embark on qualitative and mixed methods research.
It illustrates many perspectives that support the course objectives and simplifies many concepts for students to understand.
